Drug intelligence / Profile preview
0.9% NaCl solution, commonly known as normal saline, is a sterile, isotonic crystalloid solution containing 9 grams of sodium chloride per liter of water. It is widely used in clinical settings for intravenous fluid resuscitation, extracellular fluid replacement, treatment of metabolic alkalosis, and as a diluent or vehicle for the administration of other drugs. Because its osmolarity (approximately 308 mOsm/L) closely matches that of human blood plasma, it does not cause significant osmotic shifts across cell membranes. In clinical trials, such as the Phase II GLORIA study evaluating bacteriophage therapy for prosthetic joint infections, 0.9% NaCl solution is frequently utilized as an inert placebo comparator to maintain blinding.
