Drug intelligence / Profile preview
0.9% sodium chloride solution, commonly referred to as normal saline, is an isotonic crystalloid solution utilized as the placebo comparator in a specific Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT04536350) for COVID-19. This trial, led by Prof. Dr. Jörg Leuppi at the University of Basel and Cantonal Hospital Baselland, evaluates the efficacy of inhaled nebulized Aviptadil in hospitalized patients at high risk for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). In this study design, the 0.9% sodium chloride solution is administered via inhalation three times daily for ten days to serve as an inactive control arm. While sodium chloride is a standard medical fluid for hydration and electrolyte replacement, in this context, it functions strictly as a blinded control to assess the therapeutic benefit of synthetic Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide (VIP).
