Overview

1,2,3,4-Tetrahydro-beta-carboline-1-carboxylic acid is a small molecule research compound and a microbiota-derived postbiotic. It is primarily investigated for its neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Mechanistically, it functions as an inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase, the enzyme responsible for the degradation of acetylcholine in the central nervous system, which has led to its study in the context of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease. Recent research has also identified the compound as a postbiotic that may enhance the efficacy of standard chemotherapeutic agents, including gemcitabine and 5-fluorouracil, in treating pancreatic and colorectal cancers. While it is widely available from research chemical suppliers, it is not currently an approved therapeutic drug for any indication.
