Overview

1-(2-Hydroxyethyloxymethyl)-6-phenyl thiothymine, commonly known as HEPT, is a synthetic small molecule belonging to the diarylthioether class. It acts as a potent and selective non-nucleoside inhibitor of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase, thereby blocking viral replication. HEPT was developed as an antiviral agent specifically targeting human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). It has demonstrated significant in vitro activity against HIV and has been studied for its potential use in combination therapies with agents such as interferon-alpha for enhanced antiviral effects[4][3][5]. Despite promising preclinical results, it remains an experimental compound and is not approved for clinical use.
