Overview

1-Dehydroepiandrosterone (1-DHEA) is a synthetic, orally active anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) and a positional isomer of the naturally occurring hormone dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). It functions as a prohormone, undergoing enzymatic conversion in the body via 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase into 1-testosterone (dihydroboldenone) and 1-androstenedione. Unlike 5-DHEA, 1-DHEA does not aromatize to estrogen, as its primary metabolite, 1-testosterone, is not a substrate for the aromatase enzyme. This characteristic makes it a popular 'designer steroid' in the bodybuilding community for promoting lean muscle mass gains without associated estrogenic side effects such as gynecomastia or water retention. It is primarily marketed as a dietary supplement and is not currently approved by the FDA for any medical indication.
