Overview

1-methyl-N-propargyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline (1-Me-N-propargyl-TIQ) is a small molecule research compound investigated for its neuroprotective properties, particularly in the context of Parkinson's disease. It is a derivative of the endogenous neurotoxin 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline (TIQ), modified with an N-propargyl group to mimic the structure of the monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor selegiline. Research, primarily conducted at Showa Pharmaceutical University, indicates that the compound prevents MPTP-induced dopaminergic neurodegeneration and striatal dopamine depletion in animal models. Its mechanism involves the inhibition of MPP+-induced cell death and the preservation of dopamine transporter (DAT) expression and tyrosine hydroxylase-positive cells in the substantia nigra.
