Overview

1-methyl-N-propyl-tetrahydroisoquinoline (1-Me-N-propyl-TIQ) is a synthetic small molecule derivative of 1-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline (1-MeTIQ), an endogenous compound found in the human brain with neuroprotective properties. It has been investigated for its potential to treat Parkinson's disease symptoms. In preclinical studies using MPTP-treated mice, 1-methyl-N-propyl-tetrahydroisoquinoline significantly reduced bradykinesia. However, unlike its N-propargyl and N-butynyl counterparts, it failed to prevent the reduction of dopamine transporter (DAT) expression or protect tyrosine hydroxylase-positive neurons in the substantia nigra, suggesting that the specific nature of the N-functional group is critical for neuroprotection.
