**1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA)** is a synthetic organic compound and a member of the auxin family of plant hormones. It is primarily used as a plant growth regulator in agriculture and horticulture, where it promotes cell division, induces adventitious root formation, increases fruit set, prevents premature fruit drop, and enhances resistance to environmental stress. In some regions outside the United States, it has also been used as a pharmaceutical agent to treat digestive problems related to excessive fat consumption and functional disorders of the gallbladder and bile ducts. As an auxin analog, its mechanism involves mimicking natural plant hormones by binding to auxin receptors in plants; at high concentrations it can be toxic. It does not occur naturally in plants[3][4][6][1].
