Drug intelligence / Profile preview
10-hydroxycamptothecin is a natural plant alkaloid derived from the *Camptotheca acuminata* tree, known for its potent antitumor activity. It acts as a DNA topoisomerase I inhibitor, interfering with DNA replication and transcription, which leads to cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in cancer cells. The compound has demonstrated effectiveness against various cancers, including colorectal and ovarian cancers. Its clinical application has been limited by poor water solubility and instability of its lactone ring; however, advances in nanomedicine are being explored to improve its delivery and efficacy. 10-hydroxycamptothecin is currently under investigation for use in myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and other malignancies.
