10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine

The 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV10) is a biologic vaccine designed to protect against infections caused by ten serotypes of the bacterium *Streptococcus pneumoniae*. It contains purified capsular polysaccharides from these serotypes, each individually conjugated to a carrier protein (often non-toxic diphtheria toxin), which enhances the immune response compared to unconjugated polysaccharide vaccines. The primary mechanism of action is immunostimulation, leading to opsonophagocytic killing of *S. pneumoniae* and subsequent protection against diseases such as invasive pneumococcal disease, otitis media, and pneumonia. PCV10 was developed by GlaxoSmithKline and is marketed under brand names including Synflorix and Streptorix[5][6][8]. It is administered intramuscularly and recommended for routine immunization in infants and young children.
