Drug intelligence / Profile preview
1000 ppm F toothpaste is a standard over-the-counter fluoride-containing dentifrice (toothpaste) formulated with 1000 parts per million (ppm) of fluoride, typically delivered as sodium fluoride or sodium monofluorophosphate. It is widely used for the prevention of dental caries (tooth decay) and the promotion of oral health. Fluoride acts by integrating into the hydroxyapatite crystal lattice of tooth enamel to form fluorapatite, which is significantly more resistant to acid dissolution, thereby preventing demineralization and promoting remineralization of tooth surfaces. Additionally, fluoride exerts antimicrobial effects by inhibiting bacterial glycolysis, specifically targeting the enzyme phosphopyruvate hydratase (enolase) in cariogenic bacteria such as *Streptococcus mutans*. In clinical trials, such as the Phase 3 trial (NCT06365047) sponsored by Tufts University, 1000 ppm F toothpaste (specifically Colgate Cavity Protection Fluoride Toothpaste) serves as an active control comparator to evaluate the effects of investigational oral care products, such as 8% arginine toothpaste, on the oral environment of patients with medication-induced xerostomia (dry mouth).
