Drug intelligence / Profile preview
10% Sodium Sulfacetamide 5% Sulfur Cleanser is a topical combination prescription therapy indicated for the control of acne vulgaris, acne rosacea, and seborrheic dermatitis. Developed and marketed by Seton Pharmaceuticals, this formulation combines sulfacetamide sodium, a sulfonamide antibacterial, with sulfur, a keratolytic and antimicrobial agent. Sulfacetamide sodium acts as a competitive antagonist of para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), thereby inhibiting bacterial dihydropteroate synthase (DHPS) and disrupting folic acid synthesis necessary for bacterial growth. Sulfur undergoes reduction in the skin to form hydrogen sulfide, which breaks down keratin to promote desquamation and exhibits direct toxicity against Cutibacterium acnes and other surface microbes. This synergistic dual-action approach effectively reduces bacterial proliferation, follicular obstruction, and associated inflammation.
