Drug intelligence / Profile preview
10% urea lotion is a topical dermatological preparation containing urea (carbamide) at a 10% concentration. Urea is a naturally occurring component of the skin's natural moisturizing factor (NMF) and acts as a potent humectant and mild keratolytic agent. At this concentration, it enhances the hydration of the stratum corneum by increasing its water-binding capacity, likely through the denaturation of proteins and the exposure of water-binding sites. This action improves skin barrier function, increases elasticity, and alleviates symptoms such as dryness (xerosis), scaling, and pruritus. It is commonly indicated for conditions characterized by hyperkeratosis or impaired barrier function, including ichthyosis, atopic dermatitis, and psoriasis. Clinical studies have also evaluated its use in managing pruritus associated with systemic sclerosis and treating terra firma-forme dermatosis.
