Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The 11-valent Streptococcus pneumoniae conjugate vaccine is an investigational pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) developed by GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals (GSK). It is composed of 11 pneumococcal capsular polysaccharide serotypes (1, 3, 4, 5, 6B, 7F, 9V, 14, 18C, 19F, and 23F) conjugated to carrier proteins, primarily Protein D (PD) derived from non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae, and Diphtheria Toxoid (DT) for serotypes 6B and 23F. The vaccine is designed to stimulate an active immune response against Streptococcus pneumoniae infections, including pneumonia and invasive pneumococcal disease. It has been evaluated in Phase I/II clinical trials in healthy, pneumococcal vaccine-naive elderly adults (aged 65–85 years) to assess safety, reactogenicity, and immunogenicity, often utilizing novel adjuvant systems to enhance the immune response in this population.
