Drug intelligence / Profile preview
111In-Exendin-3 is a radiolabeled peptide-based diagnostic imaging agent developed by Radboud University Medical Center for the non-invasive determination of pancreatic beta-cell mass (BCM) and the monitoring of transplanted pancreatic islets. It consists of exendin-3, a stable 39-amino acid peptide analog of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) with high affinity for the GLP-1 receptor (GLP-1R), conjugated to a chelator (such as DTPA or DOTA) and labeled with the gamma-emitting radioisotope Indium-111 (111In). Because GLP-1R is highly and specifically expressed on pancreatic beta-cells and insulinomas, 111In-Exendin-3 acts as a targeted tracer for single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging. This allows for the longitudinal, non-invasive visualization and quantification of viable beta-cell mass in vivo, which is crucial for studying diabetes progression, evaluating the survival of islet grafts after transplantation, and detecting insulinomas.
