116E rotavirus vaccine

The 116E rotavirus vaccine, commercially branded as ROTAVAC (and its liquid formulation ROTAVAC 5D), is an oral, live-attenuated, monovalent human-bovine reassortant rotavirus vaccine. It was developed by Bharat Biotech International in collaboration with the Indian Department of Biotechnology, PATH, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The active ingredient is the live attenuated rotavirus 116E strain (genotype G9P[11]), which was originally isolated from an asymptomatic neonate at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. The vaccine is indicated for the active immunization of infants from the age of 6 weeks to prevent gastroenteritis caused by rotavirus infection. It is administered orally as a three-dose regimen.
