Overview

11C-ARMI is a positron emission tomography (PET) radiopharmaceutical developed by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) for the in vivo imaging of the norepinephrine transporter (NET) in the brain and peripheral tissues. Chemically, it is the carbon-11 labeled (S,S)-enantiomer of O-methylreboxetine, a derivative of the antidepressant reboxetine. 11C-ARMI binds with high affinity and selectivity to NET, which is responsible for the reuptake of norepinephrine from the synaptic cleft. By quantifying NET density and distribution, 11C-ARMI serves as a critical research tool for investigating noradrenergic system dysfunction in neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It is primarily used in clinical research to map noradrenergic terminal loss and to evaluate the target engagement of drugs that interact with the noradrenergic system.
