11C-Martinostat is a carbon-11 labeled radiopharmaceutical developed by researchers at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging. It serves as a positron emission tomography (PET) imaging probe designed to quantify the expression and activity of Class I and Class IIb histone deacetylase (HDAC) enzymes, specifically HDAC1, HDAC2, HDAC3, and HDAC6. While initially utilized extensively in neuroimaging to study epigenetic changes in the brain associated with psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders, it is currently being investigated for cardiac applications. In this context, it is used in PET-MR imaging trials to evaluate HDAC activity in patients with aortic valve stenosis and diabetes mellitus, as HDAC dysregulation is implicated in the pathological remodeling and fibrosis associated with these conditions.
