Overview

11C-methylphenidate is a radiolabeled analog of methylphenidate in which a carbon-11 (11C) isotope is incorporated for use as a positron emission tomography (PET) imaging agent. It acts as a central nervous system stimulant and is primarily used as a radiotracer to measure dopamine transporter (DAT) availability and distribution in the brain. The mechanism of action is blockade of DAT, allowing for the assessment of dopaminergic neurotransmission via PET. This compound is primarily used in research settings to study brain neurochemistry in conditions such as ADHD, Parkinson’s disease, and other neuropsychiatric disorders, rather than for direct therapeutic purposes.
