Overview
125I-iododeoxyuridine is a radioactively labeled nucleoside analog, where iodine-125 is incorporated into deoxyuridine (an analog of thymidine). It is primarily used as a research radiopharmaceutical in cell proliferation, DNA synthesis, and radiobiology studies. Its mechanism of action is based on incorporation into DNA during synthesis, allowing detection or radiolabeling of replicating cells; the radioactive decay of iodine-125 can cause DNA damage and cell death, which is exploited for experimental radiotherapeutic purposes. It is not an approved pharmaceutical for therapeutic use but is widely used in laboratory research, particularly in oncology and cell cycle studies.
