Overview

125I-mIP-bombesin is a radiolabeled peptide analog consisting of a seven-amino acid bombesin sequence labeled with the radioisotope iodine-125 via a meta-iodophenyl (mIP) prosthetic group. It is a research-stage radiopharmaceutical that specifically targets the gastrin-releasing peptide receptor (GRPr), also known as the bombesin BB2 receptor, which is overexpressed in various malignancies including ovarian, prostate, and breast cancers. The mIP modification is designed to enhance the metabolic stability of the iodine label and improve cellular internalization and intracellular retention compared to standard radioiodinated bombesin analogs. Preclinical studies have demonstrated its efficacy in tumor localization and imaging, showing significantly higher tumor-to-background ratios and lower thyroid uptake, indicating reduced deiodination in vivo.
