12AC2O is a synthetic organic gem-dihydroperoxide (DHP) compound developed as a potential therapeutic agent for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). It functions as a potent antioxidant and free radical scavenger, specifically targeting hydroxyl radicals and superoxide anions to mitigate oxidative stress, which is a key driver of ALS pathology. Preclinical research has demonstrated that 12AC2O can significantly inhibit cell death and reduce the accumulation of misfolded protein aggregates induced by mutant copper-zinc superoxide dismutase (SOD1). By addressing both the oxidative damage and the protein aggregation associated with mutant SOD1, 12AC2O represents a novel approach to neuroprotection in neurodegenerative disorders.
