It is classified as a HEPE (hydroxyeicosapentaenoic acid) and has been reported to occur naturally in the red alga Murrayella periclados. The compound features a hydroxyl group at the 12-carbon position with R stereochemistry and contains five double bonds in a specific configuration (5Z,8Z,10E,14Z,17Z). 12R-HEPE is found as an ingredient in some omega-3 formulations like Luvira, where it is combined with other omega-3 fatty acids for dietary supplementation.
