Overview

13-C labeled phosphatidylcholine-docosahexaenoic acid (13C-DHA-PC) is a carbon-13 isotopically labeled research tracer used to investigate the bioavailability and metabolic pathways of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Developed for clinical research by Hospices Civils de Lyon, it consists of DHA incorporated into a phosphatidylcholine lipid carrier, uniformly labeled with the stable isotope 13C for metabolic tracing. In clinical studies, such as NCT02168738, it is used to compare different lipidic forms of DHA to identify the most efficient carriers for brain incorporation, a process critical for addressing brain DHA deficiency associated with Alzheimer's disease. The compound specifically probes the brain's DHA incorporation pathways, including the lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) route mediated by the Mfsd2a transporter.
