Overview

13-cis-ethyl retinamide is a **synthetic retinoid derivative**, specifically the ethyl amide of 13-cis-retinoic acid (isotretinoin). It belongs to the class of retinoids, which are compounds structurally related to vitamin A and function as modulators of cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. Retinoids generally act through binding and activation of nuclear **retinoic acid receptors (RARs)** and **retinoid X receptors (RXRs)**, thereby regulating gene expression. Ethyl retinamides have been studied for their **antineoplastic** and **chemopreventive** properties in cancer models, with activity that is thought to be due to modulation of cell growth signaling and induction of cell differentiation. There is limited published information about the clinical use, development status, or commercial products containing 13-cis-ethyl retinamide. Most available data describe related compounds, such as N-(2-hydroxyethyl)retinamide (fenretinide), but not specifically 13-cis-ethyl retinamide.
