Overview

131I gelatin microspheres (131I-GMSs) are a radiopharmaceutical candidate developed for the localized treatment of solid tumors, specifically hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The agent consists of biodegradable gelatin microspheres labeled with the radioactive isotope iodine-131 (131I). Gelatin serves as a biocompatible carrier that facilitates the sustained release and prolonged retention of the radioisotope within the tumor microenvironment following intratumoral injection. The therapeutic effect is primarily driven by the beta-radiation emitted by 131I, which induces DNA damage and apoptosis in malignant cells. Preclinical studies conducted by researchers at West China Hospital of Sichuan University have demonstrated that 131I-GMSs significantly reduce tumor volume and improve survival rates in mouse models while maintaining stable thyroid function, suggesting minimal systemic leakage of the isotope.
