Drug intelligence / Profile preview
131I-hypericin (also known as OncoCiDia) is a targeted radiopharmaceutical therapy being developed by Oncocidia for the treatment of solid tumors. It consists of hypericin, a necrosis-avid small molecule, labeled with the radioactive isotope iodine-131. The therapeutic strategy, often referred to as OncoCiDia, involves a sequential dual-targeting approach: first, a vascular disrupting agent (such as combretastatin A-4 phosphate) or physical ablation (such as radiofrequency ablation or high-intensity focused ultrasound) is used to induce massive tumor necrosis. Subsequently, 131I-hypericin is administered, which selectively accumulates in the necrotic tumor tissue and delivers localized beta-radiation (and gamma-radiation for imaging) to destroy adjacent residual viable cancer cells. This approach is designed as an adjunct therapy to prevent tumor recurrence in primary and metastatic solid tumors.
