131I-labelled E48

131I-labelled E48 is a **radioimmunoconjugate** consisting of the monoclonal antibody E48 (an IgG) labeled with the radioactive isotope iodine-131. The E48 antibody specifically binds to a 22 kD antigen expressed exclusively in squamous and transitional epithelial cells and their neoplastic counterparts. Upon intravenous injection, the antibody selectively targets squamous cell carcinoma, especially of the head and neck, allowing for both diagnostic imaging and therapeutic delivery of radioactivity directly to tumor sites. The therapeutic effect is mediated by β and γ emissions from 131I, resulting in cytotoxicity to targeted tumor cells. 131I-labelled E48 has been studied primarily as a radiopharmaceutical for the treatment and imaging of squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck, with evidence of selective tumor uptake and some tumor regressions in preclinical models and early human studies[1][3].
