13C-glucose is a non-radioactive glucose isotopomer in which one or more carbon atoms are replaced by the stable carbon-13 (13C) isotope. It has potential imaging applications and is used as a tracer in metabolic studies. Different forms exist based on which carbon positions are labeled (e.g., [1-13C]glucose, [2-13C]glucose, [3-13C]glucose, or uniformly labeled [13C6]glucose). 13C-glucose breath tests are used as a non-invasive method to evaluate glucose metabolism, with different carbon positions providing insights into specific metabolic pathways. For example, the [1-13C]glucose breath test is suitable for evaluating late-stage diabetes, while the [2-13C]glucose breath test is ideal for early-stage diabetes detection.
