13C-labeled lactate

13C-labeled lactate is a stable isotope tracer compound consisting of lactate labeled with the non-radioactive carbon-13 isotope. Developed and studied by researchers at Karolinska University Hospital and Karolinska Institutet, it is utilized as an investigational metabolic tracer rather than a therapeutic agent. The compound is administered intravenously (typically as a single bolus) to characterize lactate kinetics, specifically the rate of appearance and metabolic clearance in the blood of critically ill ICU patients with organ failure.
