Overview

13C-labeled phenylalanine is a stable isotope-labeled form of the essential amino acid L-phenylalanine, where one or more carbon atoms are replaced with the non-radioactive carbon-13 isotope. It is utilized in clinical research as a metabolic tracer to investigate amino acid kinetics, protein turnover, and metabolic pathways without the risks associated with ionizing radiation. By measuring the enrichment of 13C in breath CO2 or blood/urine metabolites following administration, researchers can quantify the rate of phenylalanine oxidation and its incorporation into proteins. In a study conducted by the Institute for Environmental Sciences (jRCT1080223621), it was administered orally to healthy volunteers to evaluate carbon excretion ratios and metabolic fate over a multi-day period.
