Overview
Gastromotal is a diagnostic breath test kit developed by INFAI GmbH for the non-invasive assessment of solid gastric emptying. The active component is **13C-octanoic acid** (a stable isotope-labeled medium-chain fatty acid), which is incorporated into a standardized test meal. Upon ingestion, the rate of gastric emptying determines the delivery of the labeled acid to the small intestine, where it is absorbed and subsequently metabolized in the liver to 13CO2. The 13CO2 is then exhaled and measured in breath samples over a 240-minute period. This test is primarily indicated for diagnosing delayed gastric emptying (gastroparesis) and functional dyspepsia, and it has been used to evaluate the efficacy of prokinetic agents like domperidone.
