Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The 13C-Spirulina Gastric Emptying Breath Test (GEBT) is a non-invasive diagnostic tool developed by Cairn Diagnostics (formerly Advanced Breath Diagnostics) for the evaluation of gastric emptying rates in patients with suspected gastroparesis. The test utilizes *Spirulina platensis*, an edible blue-green alga, which has been enriched with the stable, non-radioactive isotope carbon-13 (13C). Upon oral ingestion as part of a standardized test meal, the 13C-labeled algae are emptied from the stomach, digested in the small intestine, and metabolized. The resulting 13CO2 is absorbed into the blood and subsequently exhaled. By measuring the ratio of 13CO2 to 12CO2 in breath samples collected over several hours using isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) or infrared spectrometry, clinicians can calculate the gastric emptying rate. This provides a safe, non-radioactive alternative to the traditional gold standard, gastric emptying scintigraphy, and was FDA approved in 2015.
