Overview

13C10-retinyl acetate is a stable isotope-labeled analog of retinyl acetate (Vitamin A) used primarily as a metabolic tracer in clinical research to assess Vitamin A status and absorption. By incorporating ten Carbon-13 atoms into the retinyl acetate molecule, researchers can distinguish the administered dose from endogenous Vitamin A using mass spectrometry techniques such as gas chromatography-combustion-isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC-C-IRMS). In studies led by the University of Colorado, Denver, it is employed to evaluate the impact of Environmental Enteric Dysfunction (EED) on nutrient absorption in pediatric populations. The tracer follows the same metabolic pathways as dietary Vitamin A, being absorbed in the intestine and converted to retinol, which allows for the precise quantification of total body stores and fractional absorption efficiency.
