Overview

15-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (15-HETE) is a monohydroxy fatty acid metabolite of arachidonic acid produced primarily via the 15-lipoxygenase pathway. It acts as an autocrine and paracrine signaling agent involved in regulating inflammatory responses and has both anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects. In vitro studies show that it inhibits LTB4 formation and neutrophil chemotaxis. Clinically relevant actions include inhibition of angiogenesis and growth in certain cancer cell lines through mechanisms involving reactive oxygen species generation and activation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ). It also protects pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells from apoptosis via the inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) pathway[1][2][4].
