Overview

16-Bromoepiandrosterone is a synthetic steroid and chemical analogue of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), developed as an injectable formulation. It was selected for development after demonstrating antiretroviral activity in laboratory tests. Unlike DHEA, it lacks anabolic effects but amplifies immune and metabolic responses. The compound has been investigated for its potential to limit nonproductive inflammation, enhance protective immunity, and improve survival in infections such as HIV, malaria, tuberculosis, hepatitis B and C, cytomegalovirus, polio, influenza virus, and Cryptosporidium parvum. Its mechanism involves inhibition of glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) and modulation of androgen receptor activity; it also affects cell proliferation through complex interactions with cellular receptors[1][2][3][4][5].
