Overview

**169Yb-DTPA** is a chelate complex consisting of the radioisotope ytterbium-169 (^169Yb) bound to diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA, also called pentetic acid). DTPA acts as a chelator, forming a highly stable complex with metal ions such as radioactive ytterbium. The compound is classified as a radiopharmaceutical, used primarily for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes through targeted radiation delivery. The chelator DTPA securely binds the radioisotope, enabling its use in medical imaging (such as gamma scintigraphy) or as a local radiotherapeutic agent due to the emission of gamma rays by ^169Yb. Mechanistically, DTPA (pentetic acid) acts by binding metal ions, forming stable complexes that can be used for decorporation therapy or, when radiolabeled, for radiodiagnostic or radiotherapeutic purposes.
