Overview
This hormone replacement therapy (HRT) regimen, evaluated by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), consists of transdermal 17 beta-estradiol and oral micronized progesterone. It is specifically investigated for the treatment of premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) in female adolescents aged 11 to 19 years. The regimen aims to mimic physiological hormone levels to induce puberty or provide maintenance therapy, thereby mitigating long-term risks associated with hypoestrogenism, such as osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and psychological distress. The 17 beta-estradiol is administered via a transdermal patch with escalating doses (25 to 100 micrograms), while progesterone is added cyclically (100 mg/day for 12 days/month) to protect the endometrium and induce withdrawal bleeding.
