Drug intelligence / Profile preview
188Re-microspheres (rhenium-188 microspheres) is an indigenously developed, cost-effective therapeutic radiopharmaceutical designed for selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) of unresectable liver cancers, such as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). It consists of microspheres labeled with rhenium-188 (188Re), a theranostic radionuclide that emits high-energy beta particles for localized tumor destruction and low-energy gamma photons suitable for SPECT/CT imaging and post-therapy dosimetry. Administered via intra-arterial infusion into the hepatic artery, the microspheres lodge in the microvasculature of the tumor, delivering targeted radiation while sparing healthy liver tissue. The development of this agent, particularly as a freeze-dried cold kit, offers a sustainable and affordable alternative to expensive commercial yttrium-90 (90Y) microspheres in resource-limited settings.
