Overview

188Re-MN-16ET is a therapeutic radiopharmaceutical developed for the treatment of liver malignancies, specifically hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). It consists of the beta-emitting radioisotope rhenium-188 (188Re) complexed with a lipophilic N2S2 tetradentate ligand, N-[2-(triphenylmethyl)thioethyl]-3-aza-19-ethyloxycarbonyl-3-[2-(triphenylmethyl)thioethyl]octadecanoate (H3MN-16ET). The complex is typically formulated in Lipiodol (ethiodized oil), which acts as a carrier for selective delivery to hypervascular liver tumors via transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE). Once administered intra-arterially, the radiopharmaceutical is selectively retained within the tumor vasculature, delivering localized ionizing radiation to induce tumor cell death while minimizing exposure to healthy liver tissue. Preclinical studies in rat models have demonstrated significant tumor retention and improved survival rates compared to controls.
