Overview

18F-FAA is a radiolabeled fatty acid analog developed as a positron emission tomography (PET) tracer for the assessment of myocardial fatty acid metabolism. Abnormalities in myocardial fatty acid metabolism are implicated in various cardiac diseases such as obesity, diabetes mellitus, and dilated cardiomyopathy. The compound is synthesized by labeling a suitable precursor with fluorine-18 and purified via HPLC. In preclinical studies using animal models (e.g., ZDF lean rats), 18F-FAA demonstrated favorable imaging characteristics for the myocardium and exhibited tracer kinetics similar to those of established tracers like 11C-palmitate. Its slower early clearance compared to 11C-palmitate suggests potential advantages for clinical PET imaging of altered myocardial fatty acid metabolism[6][9].
