18F-fallypride is a high-affinity radiopharmaceutical PET imaging agent that targets dopamine D2 and D3 receptors (D2/D3R). Developed and extensively studied by researchers at the University of California, Irvine, it is a small molecule radiotracer labeled with the radioisotope fluorine-18. It is primarily utilized in clinical research to visualize both striatal and extrastriatal dopamine receptors in the brain, facilitating the study of various neurological and psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and substance addiction. Beyond neuroimaging, 18F-fallypride has been investigated as a non-invasive tool for monitoring pancreatic beta-cell mass in patients with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, as these cells also express D2 receptors. It is used as a diagnostic research tool rather than a therapeutic agent.
