Drug intelligence / Profile preview
18F-FOL (also known as Al18F-NOTA-folate) is a fluorine-18-labeled folate-based positron emission tomography (PET) radiotracer designed for molecular imaging of folate receptor-expressing tissues. It consists of a folate ligand conjugated to the chelator 1,4,7-triazacyclononane-1,4,7-triacetic acid (NOTA) and radiolabeled with aluminum fluoride-18 ([18F]AlF). 18F-FOL specifically targets folate receptor beta (FR-β), which is highly expressed on activated macrophages at sites of active inflammation, as well as folate receptor alpha (FR-α), which is overexpressed in various cancers. Developed through a collaboration between the Turku PET Centre (University of Turku) and Purdue University, 18F-FOL is being preclinically evaluated for the detection and monitoring of inflammatory activity in cardiovascular diseases (such as myocardial infarction, atherosclerosis, and calcific aortic valve disease), neuroinflammatory conditions (such as multiple sclerosis), and oncology (specifically gliomas).
