Overview

18F-MC225 is a radiopharmaceutical PET tracer developed by the Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen (UMCG) for imaging the function of P-glycoprotein (P-gp/ABCB1) at the blood-brain barrier. P-glycoprotein is an efflux transporter that plays a critical role in protecting the brain from xenobiotics and is implicated in the clearance of amyloid-beta. 18F-MC225 acts as a substrate for P-gp, allowing for the non-invasive quantification of its transport activity using positron emission tomography. This tracer is primarily utilized in clinical research to investigate P-gp dysfunction in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and in psychiatric conditions like major depressive disorder.
