Drug intelligence / Profile preview
18F-MIPS (also known as [18F]MIPS15692) is a novel fluorine-18 labeled small molecule positron emission tomography (PET) radiotracer designed to target MER tyrosine kinase (MERTK). MERTK is a tyrosine kinase expressed on reparative (M2-polarized) microglia, which play a vital role in neuroregeneration and phagocytosis following central nervous system damage. Developed by researchers at Monash University, the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, and Austin Hospital, 18F-MIPS is being investigated as an imaging biomarker to detect and track neuroregenerative processes in neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases, such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and epilepsy. Preclinical studies in animal models of demyelination (cuprizone mouse model) and epilepsy (post-kainic acid rat model) have demonstrated its selectivity and potential to visualize reparative microglia in vivo.
