18F-P3BZA is a fluorine-18 labeled benzamide derivative developed as a positron emission tomography (PET) radiotracer for the specific imaging of malignant melanoma. It functions by targeting melanin, a pigment produced by melanocytes that is highly concentrated in most melanoma tumors. The tracer exhibits high binding affinity and specificity for melanin, allowing for the detection of both primary tumors and metastatic lesions with high contrast. Compared to the standard 18F-FDG PET, 18F-P3BZA offers improved specificity for melanin-positive tissues, potentially reducing false positives associated with inflammation.
