The 1918 virus-like particle vaccine is an experimental immunogen designed to elicit protective immune responses against the H1N1 influenza virus responsible for the 1918 pandemic. Developed primarily for research and pandemic preparedness, the vaccine utilizes virus-like particle (VLP) technology, which involves the self-assembly of viral structural proteins—typically hemagglutinin (HA), neuraminidase (NA), and matrix protein 1 (M1)—into non-infectious particles that mimic the native virus's morphology. By presenting these antigens in a highly organized, repetitive array, the VLP vaccine effectively stimulates both humoral and cellular immune branches without the risk of viral replication. Studies in animal models have demonstrated that this vaccine can provide robust protection against lethal challenge with the reconstructed 1918 virus and may offer cross-protective benefits against other H1N1 strains, including the 2009 pandemic H1N1.
