Overview

**2,6-Dimethoxy-1,4-benzoquinone (2,6-DMBQ)** is a synthetic and naturally occurring benzoquinone derivative found in various plants such as Rauvolfia vomitoria and Tibouchina pulchra. It is known for its antibacterial properties at physiological concentrations and has demonstrated cytotoxicity and genotoxicity at higher doses. Mechanistically it inhibits anaerobic glycolysis in cells by interfering with cellular metabolism and can induce apoptosis. It has also been studied for potential anti-platelet aggregation activity in vitro and as an anticancer agent due to its redox cycling properties[1][3][7]. However, it is also recognized as a contact allergen present in many wood species[4].
