Overview

2-heptyl–4-hydroxyquinoline N–oxide (HQNO) is a small molecule antibiotic produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and some Streptomyces species. It acts as an inhibitor of the mitochondrial respiratory chain at cytochrome bc1 and also inhibits photosynthetic electron flow before cytochrome b559. HQNO exhibits antibacterial activity, particularly against Staphylococcus aureus and other Gram-positive bacteria, and is implicated in microbial competition within environments such as the lungs of cystic fibrosis patients colonized by P. aeruginosa[1][7]. It is not approved for clinical use but has been studied experimentally for its antimicrobial properties.
