2-hydroxyoleic acid is a **synthetic α-hydroxy derivative of oleic acid** developed as a novel antineoplastic (anti-cancer) and antihypertensive agent. It modulates **cancer cell membrane lipid composition** by increasing sphingomyelin content and altering membrane organization, which affects the localization and function of proteins involved in signaling and proliferation. This leads to **cell cycle arrest and induction of apoptosis and autophagy** in a range of cancer cell lines, including glioma, leukemia, breast, and colon cancers. 2-hydroxyoleic acid induces **endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and autophagy** as a selective mechanism in cancer cells, sparing normal cells. It is orally bioavailable and has also demonstrated **antihypertensive effects** in animal models, reducing blood pressure without lowering heart rate.
